<p>Around the world, heart disease continues to be one of the largest increasing causes of death. In the United States, death from cardiac-related diseases and complications continues to be the number 1 killer of adults.  And women are number one on this list. This despite an aggressive campaign by the medical community and US Government alike, to educate people about heart disease risk factors.</p>
<p>Causes of cardiac or in more layman terms &#8220;heart&#8221; disease are many. Often, they are complex as well. For the purpose of today&#8217;s article, we will focus on a few key factors identified as major contributors.</p>
<p>According to the National Institutes For Health, the following  heart disease risk factors stood out the most:</p>
<ul>
<li>High blood pressure</li>
<li>High blood cholesterol</li>
<li>Diabetes</li>
<li>Smoking</li>
<li>Being overweight</li>
<li>Being physically inactive</li>
<li>Having a family history of early heart disease</li>
<li>Age (55 or older for women)</li>
</ul>
<p>Of those factors listed above, there are some that can be changed and some that can not. We will further explore those risk factors and which groups of people are affected the most by each. Some  heart disease risk factors, such as age and family history of early heart disease, can&#8217;t be changed.  For women, age becomes a risk factor at 55. After menopause, women are more likely to get heart disease, in part because their body&#8217;s production of estrogen drops.  Women who have gone through early menopause, either naturally or because they have had a hysterectomy, are two times as likely to develop heart disease as women of the same age who have not yet gone through menopause.  Another reason for the increasing risk is that middle age is a time when women tend to develop risk factors for heart disease.  Family history of early heart disease is another risk factor that can&#8217;t be changed.  If your father or brother had a heart attack before age 55, or if your mother or sister had one before age 65, you are more likely to get heart disease yourself.</p>
<p>While certain risk factors cannot be changed, it is important to realize that you do have control over many others. Regardless of your age, background, or health status, you can lower your risk of heart disease and it doesn&#8217;t have to be complicated. Protecting your heart can be as simple as taking a brisk walk, whipping up a good vegetable soup, or getting the support you need to maintain a healthy weight.</p>
<p>Some women believe that doing just one healthy thing will take care of all of their heart disease risk factors.  For example, they may think that if they walk or swim regularly, they can still smoke and stay fairly healthy. Wrong!  To protect your heart, it is vital to make changes that address each risk factor you have.  You can make the changes gradually, one at a time. But making them is very important. <p>Absolutely not. Each risk factor greatly increases a woman&#8217;s chance of developing heart disease. But having more than one risk factor is especially serious, because risk factors tend to &#8220;gang up&#8221; and worsen each other&#8217;s effects. So, the message is clear:  Every woman needs to take her heart disease risk factors seriously and take action now to reduce that risk.</p>
<p>Men are also affected by cardiac disease and their risk factors pretty much mirror women&#8217;s with the exception of the hormonal changes that affect women. Often men say they have no time for exercise and really do not address the heart disease risk factors as they should. It is almost as if they are simply in denial about the very things that they are doing now, that will lead to heart attack and stroke later in life.</p>
<p>Heart disease risk factors should be taken seriously by all, whether male or female. The wonderful thing about identifying your own risk factors is that you are taking the first step in lessening the chances of developing cardiovascular disease. <p>Addictions come in all packages, large and small. The human has a pension toward fixating themselves, from a hedonistic point of view, on &#8220;feeling better&#8221;. Feeling better costs them a big price in the long run. More than they realize. Sometimes people pay with the ultimate price, their lives.</p>
<p>Addictions can range from the more simple, such as caffeine and nicotine, to the more severe such as alcohol, drugs and prescription pills. Just look at the current Hollywood celebrities and how they are a virtual showcase of various forms of addiction.</p>
<p>Now there are many other forms of addictions that we just don&#8217;t ever give much thought or credence to such as: shopaholics, gamblers, on-line sex and pornography. This is the downside of the advent of the internet, unfortunately.</p>
<p>Then there are the people addicted to food, people addicted to compulsive forms of dieting such as anorexia and bulimia. Some people are even addicted to self-inflicted pain, a sort of masochism. There are violent and psychotic people addicted to hurting people and enjoying it, another form of sadistic behavior.</p>
<p>Addictions are everywhere in our society, they reach into all walks of life, all nationalities and all forms of religious belief including the radical beliefs which this type of thinking, can in and of itself, lend to another form of addiction. No one is immune to it.</p>
<p>All addictions begin with a psychological malfunction &#8211; some become physiological, as well. Many addicted persons will deny that they even have a problem.</p>
<p>Understanding your inability to be in control is a beginning. Seeking counseling and therapy to correct the abnormal thinking is a step in the right direction. Gaining control over your &#8220;habit&#8221; is the ultimate challenge and goal to freedom!!</p>

There are some smokers who, when they try to quit, they feel sick or nauseous. This can be quite common when coming off an addiction but the good news is that something can be done about this.</p>
<p><strong>Why Do People Get Sick?</strong></p>
<p>When smokers give up using willpower methods then they will crave cigarettes afterwards. This craving can manifest itself in many different ways in different people. Most people will get a feel or irritability. Some people will get a headache. And other people may even feel like they need to throw up. This is all because they were addicted to cigarettes and now are refusing to smoke them. It&#8217;s the addiction&#8217;s way of getting them to smoke again &#8211; making life without cigarettes as unbearable as possible.</p>
<p>If you are feeling sick right now then do not start smoking cigarettes again. Don&#8217;t worry, the feeling will pass and it will not last long, certainly no longer than a day. Drink plenty of fluids and call in sick if necessary. So, how can we reduce the chances of sickness happening in the first place? Let&#8217;s look at the different quitting methods.</p>
<p><strong>Using Willpower Alone</strong></p>
<p>This is often called &#8220;quitting cold turkey&#8221;. It&#8217;s when a smoker just stops smoking, often they have planned a &#8220;quit date&#8221;. For most people, this is the most stressful way of quitting. To go from one day with cigarettes to the next day without them. Most smokers find that they need immense willpower to succeed this way. And because of the huge willpower and stresses then this is the method most likely to make you sick. It&#8217;s also the method least likely to give you success.</p>
<p><strong>Cutting Down/Using Patches</strong></p>
<p>Whether you cut down on cigarettes or on patches, the effect is the same &#8211; you are cutting down on nicotine before quitting cigarettes. If you do it this way, then there will still be a shock to your system but it will be much less than previously. So, you are less likely to be sick and even if you are, it will be for less time.</p>
<p><strong>Hypnosis/Laser Treatment</strong></p>
<p>Hypnosis, acupuncture and laser treatment are all similar methods. What they do is to almost make your cravings disappear. So when you quit, you are extremely unlikely to feel sick at all. The problem is that the cravings only disappear temporarily. So, they will come back after a few days or weeks. But you&#8217;ll still be extremely unlikely to feel sick.</p>
<p><strong>Other Methods</strong></p>
<p>There are some other methods that are used successfully by a minority of ex-smoker where you never get any cravings at all. This is the idea way because the quitting process is not stressful and you never get sick.</p>

<p>By now you&#8217;re probably aware that there are many health risks associated with smoking. The government requires a certain disclosure about these health risks, and most people have heard about these possible effects whether they smoke or not. However, if you look at all the possible risks that come with smoking, you may be surprised by what you would find. Heart disease is usually listed as one of the primary health risks for the long-term smoker.</p>
<p>Most people are aware of the risk of lung cancer and other pulmonary problems. After all, it is pretty obvious that if cigarette smoke is dangerous and that smoke is inhaled through the lungs, then the lungs are vulnerable to various diseases. But why does smoking increase the risk of heart disease?</p>
<p>Well, we can start by examining what heart disease really is. If we use the term cardiovascular disease, this includes the heart along with the body&#8217;s entire system of blood vessels. The major problem with smoking is that it harms blood vessels which can in turn the lead to a heart attack or stroke. The first culprit in cigarette smoke is carbon monoxide. This compound binds with hemoglobin, which is the molecule that carries oxygen in a red blood cell. This interferes with the transportation of oxygen, and less oxygen increases the chances of heart disease.</p>
<p>The second compound is, of course, well known to most smokers and nonsmokers alike. Nicotine decreases the amount of good cholesterol which thus allows fat to be deposited on the walls of an artery. When you combine the above affects with the lack of exercise on the part of many smokers, the risk of heart disease is greatly increased. This often happens because smoking itself causes fatigue and shortness of breath, which discourages the smoker from participating in exercise.</p>
<p>When it&#8217;s all said and done, a heavy smoker has a much higher risk of developing heart disease. The good news is that the situation begins to reverse itself immediately after you quit smoking. After 5 to 15 years, your odds of developing heart disease are about as high as someone who has never smoked. Get started today, and it could add many years to your life.</p></div>

So the next time you smoke, ask yourself what is in a cigarette.</p>
<p>Nicotine is what is in the cigarette; it is the main ingredient of cigarettes. Our blood absorbs it and gives us a rush to the brain. Nicotine produces dopamine in the brain in ten seconds. Dopamine makes you happy and it is very addictive. This is the rush that people look for when they smoke a cigarette, which is why people go through withdrawal periods when trying to stop smoking.</p>
<p>Acetone is also found as an additive to the cigarette; yes, that is the stuff you use to remove your nail polish. Tar is inhaled into the lungs when a person is smoking. When a person smokes one pack or more a day, they are depositing about one to 1 ½ pounds of tar into their lungs yearly. Benzene is known to cause cancer. It is also used as a solvent in dyes and fuel. And this is all found in a cigarette.</p>
<p>What is in a cigarette that is also expelled by the car? Carbon monoxide is found in cigarettes and it prevents the oxygen being carried around the body. This is also the same chemical dispensed by cars.</p>
